Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team will have to wait for their first result, as their 8-1 lead against Ferrum College has been suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning and will resume on April 19 at Ferrum before the teams play their 6:00 PM scheduled game.
Hampden-Sydney jumped to an early lead with eight runs in the first three innings of play.
Four of those runs came in the first inning on just one hit. After Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) led off the game being hit by a pitch, the Tigers drew three straight walks to bring him home. Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) then made it 2-0 after Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) drew another walk. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) then doubled that lead with the lone hit of the inning – a two-RBI single that scored Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).
Goodwyn scored the next run of the game for the Tigers, crossing the plate in the second inning on a Counts RBI-double. Counts then scored his second run of the day later in the inning with Clawson batting him in on a single.
The Tigers added two more runs in the third, upping their lead to 8-0, as Hartman drove in Smith, and Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) doubled to score Hartman.
Ferrum was able to crack the scoreboard in the fourth, scoring one run to make it an 8-1 game.
Neither team was able to score over the next four innings.
The Tigers have used eight different pitchers so far, all throwing one inning. Charles Murrah (Tallahassee, FL/Maclay School) leads the group with two strikeouts.
Offensively, the team has six hits. Counts, Clawson, and Gothe all have two RBI, while Hartman has drawn four walks.
The Tigers and Panthers will complete this game on April 19 at Ferrum.
