Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team took a 2-0 loss at Virginia Wesleyan, being held to just two hits by the combined pitching efforts of Patrick Monteverde and Riley Koonce. With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers now stand at 20-16 overall and 9-9 in ODAC play. The Marlins sit at 19-17 on the season and 10-8 in conference play.
Monteverde pitched eight innings for the Marlins, giving up two hits and five walks while fanning six. Koonce then picked up the save with a shutout ninth.
Hampden-Sydney's pitching also had a strong effort, keeping the Tigers in the game. The Tiger hurlers scattered nine hits and did not walk a single batter. Virginia Wesleyan put the only runs on the board with two in the fourth.
Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) was the pitcher of decision, allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed three hits with a strikeout in two scoreless innings, and Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) struck out two in a shutout inning.
Offensively, Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) and Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) each recorded a hit.
Hampden-Sydney will conclude the regular season at home this Saturday, April 29 as the Tigers host Guilford College in a double header. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
