Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALEM, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers split a pair of close games with #21 Roanoke College. The Tigers won the first game 3-2 before falling 4-3 in the second game of the day. The Tigers now stand at 15-11 on the season and 4-4 in ODAC play, while Roanoke sits at 19-8 overall and 5-5 in conference.

The Tigers took leads early in both games, but each time Roanoke was able to tie the game. In the first, Hampden-Sydney regained the lead in the fifth and held on, but it was the Maroons in the second game who scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Hampden-Sydney put two quick runs on the board in the first as Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batted in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) and then later scored on a balk.

Pitching dominated the next three innings with a combined two hits over the next frames, but Roanoke broke through in the fourth with two runs to tie the game.

Hampden-Sydney fired back in the top of the fifth as Wiles batted in Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) on a sacrifice fly.

With the work of freshmen Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) and Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) on the bump, the Tigers shutout the Maroons for the rest of the way with Mayberry taking the win and Triesler the save.

Mayberry threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Triesler got his first save of the season, pitching 3.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.

Offensively, each team had six hits. Roanoke's Drew Mikula was the only player to have more than one hit with two.

Just as they did in the first game, the Tigers scored first in the second by putting two runs on the board in the second inning. Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) broke the scoreless tie when he stole home, and then Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS) hit an RBI-double that scored Fontana.

The Tigers upped their lead to 3-0 in the third after Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) scored on a Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) RBI-single.

Roanoke had just one hit in the fifth but was able to score three runs with the help of a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

Neither team broke the deadlock over the next three innings, but Roanoke's Will Black scored on a one-out wild pitch in the ninth to take the win.

The Tigers used five arms in the effort, with Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) throwing the first two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) allowed one run on three walks with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings, and Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) allowed two runs on a hit and two walks in an inning of work.

Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) was the pitcher of decision, allowing an unearned run on two walks with a strikeout.

The Tigers had seven hits to Roanoke's five, with Sutphin and Smith each having two.

Hampden-Sydney returns home for its next game and will host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
