Baseball Wins Third Straight, 6-3 Over Methodist

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-Hampden-Sydney extended its win streak to three while improving to 9-3 on the season with a 6-3 win over Methodist. With the loss, the Monarchs drop to 10-7 on the year.

The Tigers were out-hit ten to eight, but the five Tiger pitchers that took to the mound were able to scatter the hits and limit the damage.

Offensively, Hampden-Sydney wasted no time getting on the board with Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) driving in Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) on an RBI-groundout.

Methodist took the lead in the second with two runs, but the Tigers responded an inning later, reclaiming the lead as Goodwyn homered and then Blevins scored on a Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes).

After two scoreless, Methodist tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Counts struck again in the eighth, batting in Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) to take the lead. Blevins and Counts then scored later in the inning, with Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) and Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) driving them home.

Maitland then moved to the mound and picked up his third save of the year and second in as many days.

Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) threw the first four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.

Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) improved to 3-0 on the season after pitching a scoreless inning and a third, while Charles Murrah (Athens, GA/Maclay School) and Maitland each pitched one shutout inning.

Maitland also went 3-of-4 from the plate while Goodwyn and Counts each had two hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, March 11 as the Tigers travel to Lexington to face the Generals of Washington & Lee in a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
