Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team improved to 5-0 on the young season while winning its opening game of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament in convincing fashion, using 19 hits in a 15-1 win over Southern Virginia. The loss drops the Knights to 5-8 overall.
The Tigers had a quick start offensively, scoring one run in each of the first three innings. Josh Duimstra (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run), Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill), and Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) all scored while Blevins, Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point), and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) batted in the runs.
Southern Virginia got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth, but the Tigers fired right back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, including two on a two-RBI single from Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin).
The offense kept rolling into the seventh, adding six more runs. In the inning, Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) blasted a three-run homerun before Triesler batted in two more on a single.
The Tigers then added two more insurance runs with Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batting in Matthew Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Cory Allgood (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batting in Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS).
Blevins led the offense with a game-high three hits.
On the mound, freshman Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) was strong in the win, pitching eight innings while allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow at 10:00 AM as they host Moravian College.
