Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team remained perfect with an 8-7 victory over Marymount on Wednesday afternoon. The game lasted six innings before being called for lack of light. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-0 on the season while the Saints fall to 2-1. Each team had nine hits and drew five walks.
The Tigers' patience at the plate paid off in the bottom of the first, using three walks to help go up 2-0 early. Shane Arceo (Newport News, VA/Denbigh) led off with the single, and after two walks, he was driven in on a Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) sacrifice fly. After the bases were loaded again, Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) scored on an Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) sacrifice fly.
After Marymount scored one in the top of the second, the Tigers tacked on four more, with Blevins batting in two on a double. Blevins and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) then later scored on miscues from the Saints.
Marymount chipped away at the Tigers' lead, scoring three in the third and one in the fourth to trail 6-5 heading into the fifth. That's where the Saints took their lead with two runs in the top half of the inning.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Tigers struck back and tied the game with Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) scoring from third on a bases loaded hit batter. Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) then batted in Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) to reclaim the lead.
After a scoreless sixth, the game was called.
Four pitchers saw action with Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) picking up the victory, and Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) recording the save.
Offensively, the Tigers tallied nine hits, including a perfect 3-for-3 day from Arceo. Fontana went 2-for-3.
Hampden-Sydney will remain at home as the Tigers host the Floyd B. Wilcox Tournament on February 24-26. The Tigers will play their first game against Southern Virginia at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 24.
