  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 13-5; Guilford 8-9

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Originally scheduled to start at 5 pm, the game was delayed until 6:30 pm due to a severe thunderstorm that rolled through the area, but the skies cleared for a sunny evening the rest of the way
  • Guilford struck first on a man-up goal from Joe Eggleston and Alex Brownlee made it 2-0 at 8:41
  • Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) broke the H-SC scoring drought at 7:09
  • Eggleston added another extra-man goal at 2:56 to make it a 3-1 after 15 minutes of play
  • Daniel Haupt opened the second frame by finding the back of the net at 11:14.
  • The teams would go scoreless for 10 minutes before Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) sent a bounce shot from the right wing into the top left corner of the cage at 1:11.
  • Guilford won the ensuing faceoff, but Thomas Passenant (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) forced a turnover, and the Tigers converted a clear with 40 seconds left. H-SC called a timeout at 16 seconds, and then Koferl buried a shot with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock to make it just a 4-3 game going into the half
  • Daniel Haupt opened up the second half with a strike at 11:07
  • Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) proceeded to finish off a Brown pass at 10:06, and Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) tied it off a Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) pass from behind the cage at 7:04
  • Pool then scored a goal of his own, this time of the man up variety, to take the lead for the good guys, 6-5, at the 6:12 mark.
  • The game proved to be a back-and-forth affair for much of the rest of the night and was tied 7-7 after Andrew McDonagh posted a goal with 0.9 seconds left
  • Guilford once again scored early in the fourth quarter to take the lead, but Morris and Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) recorded back-to-back tallies to go up 9-8 with 8:29 to play
  • Daniel Hughey would tie the game again less than a minute later at 7:37
  • H-SC won the face-off, and Brown put Hampden-Sydney back on top at 6:45
  • Mitch Renfrow (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) made a save on a Dylan Haupt shot at the 5:46 mark. Kevin Wilhelm (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) picked up the ground ball, raced down the field to clear it in transition, and fired a shot into the back of the net to provide H-SC their first multi-goal lead at 11-9 with 5:31 left in the game.
  • Another big save from Renfrow on the next possession led to another Tigers possession. H-SC looked to run clock despite being man up for a minute starting at 4:26, but the Tigers eventually put in their final goal of the night at 2:45
  • Guilford won the faceoff but a poor pass led to a Quaker turnover. The Tigers gave it back with only a little over a minute left and Guilford was not able to capitalize.
