Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA - With its second win in as many days, fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney has advanced to the final day of the 2016 ODAC Baseball Tournament and is two wins away from the championship after a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Bridgewater. The Tigers now improve to 28-14 on the season while the Eagles, who are now eliminated from the tournament, stand at 22-19. The 28th victory is a program record, beating the 2005 and 2014 mark of 27.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) and Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) each scored with John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) batting them in.

The Eagles scored a run in the top of the second, but Hampden-Sydney put the lead back up to two when Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) scored on an RBI-single from Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) in the fourth.

The Tigers added a little insurance in the sixth after Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) scored on a Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) RBI-single.

Pitching again was key for the Tigers, as Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) allowed just one run in 4.1 innings on five hits and two walks with a strikeout. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) threw 1.2 shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout. Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) then picked up his second save of the tournament, hurling three shutout innings, striking out four and giving up just two hits.

The Tigers had ten hits to Bridgewater's nine. Carneal was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles. Wiles went 2-for-3.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow at 1:00 PM to face second-seeded Randolph-Macon. The Tigers will either have to beat Randolph-Macon twice, or defeat the Jackets and top-seeded Shenandoah to win the championship depending on how game nine of the tournament plays out.
