Tigers Fall 2-1 to Generals in ODAC Tourney Day One

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA-In a tight pitcher's duel, the fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney Tigers came up just short in a 2-1 loss to the third-seeded Generals of Washington & Lee. Both teams will play tomorrow in the double elimination tournament, with the Tigers facing top-seeded Shenandoah tomorrow at 2:30 PM at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Both team's aces lived up to their billing, each going the distance. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) took the loss, but allowed just two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in eight innings. Tom Conklin held the Tigers to just one run on ten hits with six strikeouts.

The Tigers were first to reach the board, scoring in the second as Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) hit an RBI-single to score Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill).

Johnson held the Generals at bay through five innings, but they broke through in the sixth with Matt Wasson scoring on a Luke Myer RBI-single. They then scored the go-ahead run in eighth with Wasson scoring again, this time on a Robey Smalley RBI-single.

The Tigers had a chance in the top of the ninth with Wiles on second and two-outs. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) ripped a single to center field, but Myer threw a bullet to top pinch runner Shane Arceo (Newport News, VA/Denbigh) at the plate and hold the win.

Of the Tigers ten hits, Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Fontana each had two.
