Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney had a strong finish to the regular season, sweeping Washington & Lee by scores of 2-1 and 7-5 and securing a spot in the 2016 ODAC Baseball Tournament. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 26-13 overall and 12-8 in ODAC play. The Generals drop to 25-12 overall and 13-7 in the ODAC.
Game one went into extra innings courtesy great pitching from each team with a combined 11 hits in the first nine innings. Tom Conklin had a no hitter going into the sixth, but Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) broke it up with a one out single.
The Generals offense was held in check by Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) who allowed just one run in the third while pitching nine innings, giving up eight hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Each team had chances, stranding five runners each heading into the bottom of the ninth. Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) led off the inning with a walk, and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) quickly knocked an RBI triple to tie the game. Danny Devereux, however, retired the next three batters to force extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth, Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) led off the eleventh with a double and was later driven in on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill).
The Tigers had just four hits in the game but were able to draw seven walks. Carneal reached base four times, with a hit, two walks, and a reach on an error.
Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two.
In the second game, it was the Tigers who struck first when three straight doubles drove in Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair), Goodwyn, and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS).
The Tigers had another big inning in the sixth, scoring four runs with Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) driving in one, and Goodwyn driving in two before scoring on an error.
The Generals were able to cross the plate in the top of the seventh, scoring three to come within four at 7-3.
Each team had 11 hits. Goodwyn, Carneal and Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) each had two hits.
The Tigers used seven pitchers in the effort, with Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) picking up the win.
Seeding, opponent, and game time are still too be determined for the ODAC Tournament, which will begin Thursday, April 28 at Lynchburg City Stadium.
