Box Score 2 HARRISONBURG, VA-Offense was no problem for neither Hampden-Sydney nor Eastern Mennonite as the two teams split the Saturday baseball double header with the Tigers taking an 11-8 win and the Royals taking the second game 9-6. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 19-11 overall and 5-6 in ODAC play; Eastern Mennonite stands at 12-13 on the season and 4-8 in conference.
The first game started with two scoreless innings before the teams started to find their groove, scoring one run each in the third. The Tigers then opened it up with five runs in the fourth. John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) started it off with an RBI-double and then later scoring on an error. Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) drove in runs by drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch, respectively. Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) later batted in Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) before the inning was over to go up 6-1.
Eastern Mennonite scored five of their own in the sixth to tie the game, but Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) hit a solo homerun in the ensuing inning to put the Tigers back on top.
Hampden-Sydney added four more in the eighth with Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex), Blevins and Fontana all brining in runs.
Eastern Mennonite added two more in eighth.
Johnson allowed six runs on 11 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in five innings. Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) got the win, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in two innings. Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) threw the final two innings, allowing two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Eastern Mennonite out hit the Tigers 16-10. Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) and Fontana each had two hits.
Eastern Mennonite started the scoring in the second game, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. Lloyd drove in Goodwyn in the third to tie the game, but the Royals tacked on another in the bottom of the frame to go up 2-1.
The two teams continued to match each other, both scoring four in the fifth – the Tigers' inning being highlighted by a two-RBI single by Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin). They then each added one in the seventh before the Royals added the final two runs in the eighth.
The Tigers used five pitchers; Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) was the pitcher of decision.
Hampden-Sydney had 13 hits to the Royals 18. Peevey was a perfect 4-for-4 while Goodwyn went 3-for-5.
The Tigers will return to action Tuesday, April 5 as the Tigers will host Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
