#19 Roanoke Holds Off Lacrosse 9-8

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The #19 Roanoke lacrosse team held off a late Hampden-Sydney rally to win 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hampden-Sydney struck first as Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) finished off a feed from Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) at the 8:07 mark of the first quarter
  • The lead didn't last long as just 15 seconds later, Roanoke found themselves up 2-1 after Cameron Linsley won and scored off back-to-back face-offs.
  • Linsley and Brendan Devane found the back of the net at 3:45 and 3:24 to put the Maroons up 4-1
  • Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) and Will Pilat closed the quarter with a goal each as Roanoke led 5-2 after 15 minutes
  • IV Stucker pushed the Maroons lead back to four at 13:46 in the second, but they were shut out for the rest of the half.
  • Levin struck at 1:56 and Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) scored with just 12 seconds left in the half to trim the deficit to just two, 6-4
  • Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) drew Hampden-Sydney withine one as he scored the first goal of the second half at 12:54
  • Pilat kept the Tigers at bay as he found the back of the net on an extra-man opportunity at 11:44 then scored against at 6:41.
  • Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) brought the deficit back down to two at 3:19, sending the game into the final frame with a score of 8-6
  • Kevin Jackson regained a three-goal advantage for Roanoke at the 9:14 mark, but that would be the last goal they would register
  • After a Roanoke failed clear at 2:13, the Tigers cleared the ball and Shaheen scored off a Koferl pass at 1:21 to cut the lead to 9-7
  • The Tigers won the face-off and a yellow flag came flying out around the 50 second mark, and H-SC threw the ball out of bounds to get the one-minute man-up opportunity.
  • Levin saw his shot saved at the 28 second mark, but Roanoke proceeded to turnover the ball just four seconds later on the clear.
  • The Tigers got off the shots that all went wide, but Koferl was able to pick up a groundball and score an extra-man goal with 4.7 seconds left on the clock.
  • Jared Arntzen (Atlanta, VA/Blue Ridge) won the ensuing face-off but was not able to get a shot off as the ball was picked up beyond the midfield line.

  • Arntzen was 11-for-18 on face-offs with four ground balls
  • Levin tallied two goals and one assist
  • Koferl handed out two assists while scoring once
  • Shaheen found the back of the net twice
