Box Score ASHLAND, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team completed a season sweep of arch-rival Randolph-Macon, downing the second-ranked Yellow Jackets 7-6 at Estes Park. With the win, the Tigers improve to 24-13 overall and 10-8 in ODAC play, while Randolph-Macon drops to 26-6-1 overall and 12-6 in conference.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first run of the game in the second inning, but the Tigers used four runs in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game. Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) started off the scoring when he crossed home plate on a bases loaded walk by Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle). John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) then singled to score Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) to take the lead. Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) grounded out to first base to score Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), and then Carneal scored on an RBI-single from Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill).
The Tigers had the lead, but Randolph-Macon would not go away, scoring two runs in the bottom half to the frame to come back within one. The Yellow Jackets then tied the game in the fifth with one more run.
Homeruns from Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) in the sixth and Lloyd in the eighth, however, gave Hampden-Sydney some breathing room at 6-4.
Randolph-Macon again cut it to one with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Carneal drove in his second run of the day in the top of the ninth, driving in Shane Arceo (Newport News, VA/Denbigh).
With three outs remaining, Randolph-Macon scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and advanced the tying run to third, but Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) closed it out and collected the save.
Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) took the win after an inning in relief. Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) threw the first three innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits and a walk. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) tossed a scoreless inning, and Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) pitched three innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits with two strikeouts.
The Tigers had 11 hits to Randolph-Macon's 13, and Goodwyn, Lloyd, and Fontana each had two.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Saturday, April 23 as the Tigers host Washington & Lee in a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
