Lacrosse Topples Lynchburg 13-9 on Senior Day

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse scored nine of the game's 11 goals spanning the 7:10 mark of the second quarter until 2:02 left in the third to defeat Lynchburg College 13-9 in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 13, Lynchburg 9
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 10-5, 5-2 ODAC; Lynchburg 7-7, 4-2 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A strong defensive first quarter from both teams saw each allow just one goal as Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored for the Tigers at 9:32 while Colin McGuire scored for the Hornets at 8:34
  • Lynchburg opened the second quarter with goals at 14:20 and 11:51 to surge ahead 3-1
  • Levin notched another goal at the 7:10 mark, but LC's Austin Stewart answered back with a score of his own at 6:20
  • The Tigers took over the second quarter from there with Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) getting the run started at 5:21, finishing off a Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) pass
  • Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) tied the game off a Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) pass at 1:35.
  • Jared Arntzen (Atlanta, VA/Blue Ridge) won the ensuring face-off, picked up the ground ball, and then ran down the middle of the Hornet defense and stuck a shot in the top left corner of the net for his first career goal to give H-SC a 5-4 lead
  • However, the lead didn't last long and Dane Angell tied the game at 5-5 with 1:10 to go in the half
  • The Tigers got possession back, and with a flag down for an oncoming Lynchburg penalty, Morris struck with only 16 seconds left to provide the Tigers a 6-5 lead going into halftime.
  • The Tigers built the lead up to two, 7-5, as Levin found Brown at 13:54 in the third quarter
  • The next six minutes were quiet, but Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) scored at 7:18 and 3:34 to make it a 9-5 Hampden-Sydney lead
  • The Tigers run ended at 2:02 when Koferl dished a pass to Shaheen for a goal, making it 10-5
  • Lynchburg used a three-goal flurry in the last 64 seconds of the third quarter to end the bleeding and put themselves down just two goals, 10-8, going into the final frame
  • Shaheen put a halt to the Hornets momentum when he found the back of the net off a Brown dish at 14:20, and Koferl pushed the advantage back to four, 12-8, with 11:55 to play
  • The game got sloppy from there, but Lynchburg was able to strike at 6:38 to trail by just three goals
  • Pool negated the Hornet goal at 4:43 to keep it a four-goal game, and the Tigers were able to possess the ball for most of the game's final minutes

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Defensive Seniors Thomas Passenant (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day), Kyle Fraser (Salem, VA/North Cross), and Aaron Hales (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) keyed an impressive defensive effort that limited All-Americans Austin Stewart and Aaron Murphy to just four goals on 21 shots and also kept star freshman Evan Lombardo without a point for the first time in nine games
  • Koferl, a senior, stepped up to the plate in a big way with three goals and an assist
  • Shaheen notched his first career hat trick
  • Pool and Levin each contributed two goals and an assist
  • Brown contributed two assists and a goal while Morris added on two points on a score and an assist
  • Arntzen won nine face-offs to go with four ground balls and a goal
  • Kent Henry (Crozet, VA/Western Albemarle) forced three turnovers and Passenant added on a team-high five ground balls
  • Mitch Renfrow (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) posted 11 saves to go with a team-high five ground balls

FOR THE FOES

  • Dane Angell, Stewart, Murphy, and Colin McGuire each scored twice
  • Bobby Distler won 15-of-24 face-offs with a game-high six ground balls

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Lynchburg outshot Hampden-Sydney 40-29 but the Tigers held a 22-20 advantage in shots on goal
  • Despite losing the face-off battle 15 to 9, H-SC outgained LC 27-25 in ground balls
  • H-SC went 23-for-26 on clears compared to a 16-for-18 performance for LC
  • The Tigers came into the game ranking top 10 nationally in man-up offense and was 9-for-10 in ODAC games, but the Lynchburg man-down defense limited H-SC to an 0-5 performance
