GREENSBORO, NC – Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse picked up a key 11-7 win on the road at Guilford College to stay near the top of the ODAC standings on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 11, Guilford 7
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 9-5, 4-2 ODAC; Guilford 6-7, 2-4 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers got the upper hand early as an impressive first quarter saw H-SC leading 3-0 after 15 minutes behind goals from Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's), Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), and Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) along with strong play from the defense
  • Matt Bowen put the Quakers on the scoreboard 35 seconds into the second quarter to cut the lead to 3-1, but scores just 40 seconds apart from Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) saw the Tigers jump out to a 5-1 lead with 11:09 left in the half.
  • The Quakers settled down and took over from there, scoring the last four goals of the half when Adam Fiore's man-up goal at the 1:30 mark tied the game at 5-5 heading into halftime
  • The Quakers kept the momentum going into the third quarter as Daniel Haupt found the back of the net to give Guilford a 6-5 lead.
  • H-SC didn't take long to wrestle back momentum and control of the contest as Levin finished off a Jack Doetzer (Holly Spring, NC/Middle Creek) pass at 9:17 to knot the game at 6-6
  • Just 36 seconds later, Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) fed Brown on a man-up goal to regain the lead for the Tigers with 8:41 to play in the third frame
  • Koferl delivered again at the 4:02 mark, this time to Shaheen, to push the advantage out to two, 8-6
  • Neither team was able to get anything going on offense for most of the fourth quarter, but Brown pocketed his third goal of the day at 7:52 to provide H-SC a three-goal cushion
  • Morris provided another quick turnaround goal, scoring just over a minute later at 6:34 to make it a 10-6 contest.
  • H-SC drew a two-minute unreleasable penalty with 2:24 to play, and Daniel Hughey scored at 1:45 to close the deficit to three
  • Koferl won the man-down face-off and Shaheen found Levin for a man-down goal at 1:16 to end any hopes of a Quaker comeback
