Tigers Split Double Header with Bridgewater

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater split two pitching battles on Saturday with each team taking a 2-1 victory. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 21-12 on the season and 7-7 in ODAC play; Bridgewater is now 20-13 overall and 10-6 in conference.

In game one, Bridgewater took the early lead with a run in the second while Ryan Leake was nearly unhittable through five innings, giving up just one hit and one walk.

The Tigers, however, got to Leake in the sixth, with Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batting in Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) to tie the game, and then Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) drove in Gothe with a single to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers were able to maintain that lead as Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) and Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) each pitched three scoreless innings; and Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) collected his fifth save after retiring three batters in the ninth.

Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Leake pitched all eight innings for the Eagles, allowing two runs on just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The Tigers had three hits to Bridgewater's eight.

Game two was another pitcher's duel, with Bridgewater being the only team to cross the plate through the first seven innings with one run in the third and seventh.

The Tigers finally got on the board in the eighth with a bloop single from Carneal scoring Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) to come within one, but the Eagles would fend off any other attempt at a comeback.

Both teams had multiple opportunities – the Eagles stranded nine runners while the Tigers left six.

The Tigers had six hits with Carneal and Wiles each recording two.

On the mound, Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Gonzales and Perkins combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday, April 12 as the Tigers travel to North Carolina to face Methodist University. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
