Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Shenandoah swept the Tiger baseball team with scores of 7-1 and 3-1 behind two impressive outings from their starting pitchers. The Tigers fall to 16-10 overall and 3-5 in ODAC play, while the Hornets improve to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in the ODAC.

Shenandoah took game one 7-1 behind a strong performance on the mound by Darrell Thompson, who allowed just one run on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex), who was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, was also solid in his outing, allowing five runs – three earned – on nine hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) scored the Tigers' run in the fifth on a Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) RBI, while the team scattered eight other hits throughout, leaving nine runners on base.

Goodwyn and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) each had two hits in the effort.

Game two was another pitchers' duel, with a combined 12 hits. Shenandoah's Michael Scimanico went eight innings, allowing one run on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) went five innings, allowing two runs on just three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Tigers took the early lead, scoring a run in the first inning with Gothe rounding the bases on a John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) RBI-double.

The Hornets got on the board in the third, taking the lead with two runs.

Hampden-Sydney later nearly tied the game in the fifth, but Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) was thrown out at home on a fly ball to right.

The Hornets upped their lead to 3-1 in eighth after Jake Loew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) limited the damage, however, striking out the ensuing batter to get out of the inning.

The Tigers put two base runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Phil Morse collected his fourth save of the season.

Lloyd and Goodwin each had two of the Tigers' seven hits.

Hampden-Sydney remains at home, returning to action Tuesday, March 29 as the Tigers host Averett at 3:00 PM.
