Baseball Takes 13-7 Decision Over Lynchburg

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney's offense was hot, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits as the Tigers outlasted Lynchburg 13-7 in ODAC action. With the win, the Tigers improve to 16-8 overall and 3-3 in conference while the Hornets drop to 7-15 on the season and 3-5 in the ODAC.

Each team scored one run in the first, with the Tigers' coming when John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) scored on a Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) RBI-single. Lloyd was then one four Tigers to bat in runs in the second as they upped their lead to 6-1. Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski), Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair), Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights), and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) all crossed the plate in the inning.

The Tigers had another big inning in the fourth, scoring four more runs that included a two-run homerun from Lloyd.

Hampden-Sydney increased its lead to 11-1 in the bottom of the sixth with Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) driving in Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), but the Hornets got hot in the top of the seventh to the tune of six runs on six hits and an error to pull within four.

Gothe fired back in the eighth, driving in Smith and Shane Arceo (Newport News, VA/Denbigh) on a double to make it a 13-7 game.

Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) then closed the game out, recording the final three outs.

Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) picked up the win after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing six runs – four earned – on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Offensively, the Tigers had 15 hits to Lynchburg's 12 while both teams had two errors. Goodwyn, Gothe, and Smith all had three hits. Goodwyn scored two, drove in two, and stole three bases; Gothe drove in five runs and scored two; and Smith scored three.

The Tigers remain at home and will host Shenandoah on Saturday, March 26 for a double header. First pitch is slated for noon.
