Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Roanoke evened the season series with the Tigers, taking a 7-3 win on Saturday morning at Ty Cobb Ballpark at Wurdeman Stadium. The teams hit fairly evenly with Roanoke taking a 13-11 edge, but the Tigers were hampered by five errors. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 15-8 overall and 2-3 in the ODAC while the Maroons improve to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in conference.
After being held scoreless the day before, Roanoke hit the board early and often, scoring four runs on five hits and an error in the first inning.
The Tigers chipped into the lead in the bottom of the second when Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) batted in Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) on an RBI-single.
The Maroons, however, put it back to a four run game after scoring one in the top of the fourth. They then pushed it to 7-1 with two runs in the fifth.
The Tigers were knocking on the door in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs, but Dan Ruhlman pitched his way out of it courtesy an infield fly and a double play.
Hampden-Sydney did rally in the ninth, with Elliott batting in Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) and later scoring himself on a Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) RBI-single.
Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) was the pitcher of decision, allowing five runs – three earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts in four innings. Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman), Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker), and Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) all pitched an inning without giving up an earned run, though two unearned were scored on O'Brien. Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) also took to the mound, throwing two shutout innings.
Offensively, Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), Johnson, and Elliott all had two hits.
The Tigers return to action Thursday, March 24 as they host the Hornets of Lynchburg College. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
