Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team had a five-game win streak snapped after falling 9-2 to Virginia Wesleyan. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 14-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Marlins improve to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the ODAC.
Both Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) and Sean Grieser started out well on the mound, holding each opponent scoreless through the first three innings.
The Marlins broke the tie in the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits.
Hampden-Sydney responded in the top of the fifth with Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) each scoring on a throwing error following a Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) double.
3-2 would be as close as the Tigers would get with Virginia Wesleyan knocking in four more runs in the bottom half of the frame and two more in the eighth.
The Tigers did manage ten hits with Goodwyn, Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski), and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) all recording two.
Butler was the pitcher of decision, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk with a strikeout in 4.1 innings pitched. Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) allowed two unearned runs on four hits but had five strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, March 19 as they host Roanoke for a noon double header.
