Washington and Lee Picks Up 10-7 Win Over Lacrosse

LEXINGTON, VA – The Washington and Lee University Generals held off Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse for a 10-7 win on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 7, Washington and Lee 10
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 4-4, 0-1 ODAC; Washington and Lee 4-2, 1-0 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • W&L got the opening goal at 9:54, but scores from Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) at 7:05 and Jake Hargrove (Raleigh, NC/Athens Drive) at 1:03 gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead after the first quarter
  • Five goals were scored in the second frame, all within the first five minutes, with Chris Comerford's score at 10:44 tied the game at 4-4
  • H-SC opened the second half with a man-up goal courtesy of Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) at at 9:03, but the Generals would go on to score four straight times in the last five minutes of the third quarter to go into the fourth quarter with a three goal cushion, 8-5
  • Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) trimmed the deficit to two when he found the back of the net at 10:40
  • Ian Levin's (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) man-up score at 5:59 put the Tigers down just one goal
  • Graeme Weaver pushed the Generals lead back out to two at 4:12, then Andrew Riehl picked up the ground ball after the face-off and scored just 12 seconds later.
  • Washington and Lee got the ball back off a turnover at 1:24 and was able to run out the clock to preserve the win

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Pool paced the Tiger offense with three goals and one assist
  • Koferl added on a goal and an assist
  • Thomas Passenant (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) recorded four caused turnovers along with four ground balls

FOR THE FOES

  • A.J. Witherell led W&L with three goals
  • Weaver, Kevin Katzmann, and Comerford each scored twice
  • Jack Clarke was 9-14 on face-offs while Bobby Doyle went 5-7

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Hampden-Sydney turned over the ball 20 times compared to only 14 for Washington and Lee
  • The Generals won 14-of-21 face-offs
