Tigers Sweep Ferrum in Sunday Double Header

FERRUM, VA-The Tiger baseball team improved to 2-1 on the young season while sweeping Ferrum in a Sunday double header. The Tigers cruised in the first game to a 5-0 victory while they took a 6-5 win in extras in the second game of the day. Ferrum drops to 1-2 with the losses.

The Tigers knocked eight hits in game one, while Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk with three strikeouts for the win. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) and Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) each pitched one perfect inning.

At the plate, the Tigers first took the lead in the bottom of the third as Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) hit a solo homerun.

Austin Stephan (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batted in Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin) in the fourth to up the lead to 3-0. Before the inning was over, Stephan stole home to tack on one more.

Stephan helped add one more insurance run in the sixth, doubling to score Carneal again.

Stephan and Carneal each went 2-for-3 in the effort.

The second game was more contested, needing an extra inning to be decided.

The Tigers again got out to a lead, using two runs in he third from Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) and Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) each scoring on a pitcher's error.

Ferrum got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Tigers fired back with one of their own in the top of the fifth as Flanagan scored again on a Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) RBI.

Ferrum tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, and each team scored another run in the sixth to keep the deadlock.

After a scoreless seventh, Hartman broke the tie with a two RBI-double that scored Stephan and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill).

The Panthers scored one in the bottom of the eighth, but Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) stood strong to collect the win. Gonzales went two innings, allowing one run on a hit and two walks. Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) started the game and went five strong, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Tigers recorded six hits with Flanagan going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

The Tigers remain on the road and will return to action Thursday, February 11 as they face the Captains of Christopher Newport University. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
