Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney had a four-game win streak snapped in the final game of the H-SC Classic, falling 5-2 to Moravian. The Tigers, who stand at 7-4 on the season, went 2-1 on the weekend.
Moravian wasted no time getting on the board, scoring its leadoff man in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers did just the same, getting lead off man Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) across the plate on a Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) RBI-single. They were close to getting more, with runners on second and third with one out, but Nicholas Ampietro was able to retire the next two batters.
After a scoreless second, Moravian broke the tie in the third with two runs on two hits and an error.
Hampden-Sydney again knocked on the door in the fourth, getting runners on second and third, but Ampietro got a strikeout to keep it a 3-1 Greyhound lead.
Moravain upped their lead to 5-1 with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but the Tigers chipped into that lead in the bottom of the sixth with Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) scoring on a Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) RBI-single.
Both teams found some offense in the ensuing innings, but neither got enough to add to the scoreboard.
Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) was the pitcher of decision, allowing three runs – just one earned on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) and Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) each allowed one run in one inning of work; and Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) and Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) each pitched a scoreless inning.
As a team, the Tigers recorded eight hits to Moravian's 11. Hartman and Fontana led the way with two hits a piece.
The Tigers will remain at home and host the Captains of Christopher Newport on Tuesday, March 1. First pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
