Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Tiger baseball team improved to 7-3 on the season while sweeping the first day of the H-SC Classic, taking a 5-2 win over York and an 8-1 win over Moravian. The Tigers used strong pitching performances in both games. Senior Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) recorded his first win of the season, going the distance against York while allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Against Moravian, Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) allowed just one run on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Offensively, Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) had a monster day, going 7-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored and one RBI.
Hits were hard to come by in the Tigers' first game against York with a total of 13 tallied, but York was first to break the 0-0 tie, knocking in two runs in the top of the third on two hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
The Tigers' patience at the plate paid off, using walks drawn by and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) to set up a three-run homer from Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) with two outs.
Carneal added insurance for the Tigers in the seventh, batting in Goodwyn after Goodwyn recorded an RBI-double to drive in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point).
Wiles, Goodwyn, and Carneal all tallied two hits, while Carneal batted in four runs and scored one.
Goodwyn and Carneal continued their work into the game against Moravian, giving the Tigers the early 1-0 lead when Goodwyn crossed the plate on a two-out triple from Carneal.
Hampden-Sydney tacked on two more in the second; Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) batted in Austin Stephan (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) scored from third when the Greyhounds tried to catch Elliott stealing second.
Carneal later batted in Goodwyn yet again with a single in the third. Lloyd and Carneal also scored in the inning on sacrifice flies from Johnson and Fontana, give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.
Fontana hit an RBI-single in the fifth to score Carneal and give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
Moravian was able to cross the plate in the seventh, but the Tigers responded with a run of their own as Stephan batted in Johnson.
Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) and Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) each pitched a scoreless inning. At the plate, the Tigers knocked 15 hits, including a 5-for-5 performance from Goodwyn. Stephan went 3-for-4 and Carneal and Fontana each had two hits.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action tomorrow, closing out the H-SC Classic with a 3:00 PM first pitch against Moravian. The Greyhounds will face York at 11:00 AM to start the day.
