Christopher Newport Pulls Away Late in 9-6 Win Over H-SC Lacrosse

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport scored two goals in the final two minutes to pull away from Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse for a 9-6 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers were held scorless for the first 21:52 of the game while CNU scored three goals in the opening quarter
  • A Captains penalty enabled the Tigers to get on the scoreboard with an Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) man-up tally at 8:08
  • Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) drew the Tigers within one at 4:41, but Will Geise put CNU back ahead by two just 33 seconds later
  • Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) then finished off a Brown pass for an extra-man goal, but the Captains once again answered a minute later to keep it a two-goal CNU advantage, 5-3, going into halftime
  • The Tigers man-up unit rose to the occasion again early in the third quarter as Brown delivered a pass to Connor Pool (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) at 13:55 to make it a one-goal game
  • Both offenses stalled over the next 10 minutes until CNU's Joey Rolando made it a 6-4 game at 3:32
  • Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) drew the Tigers within one with a goal just a second before the third quarter buzzer
  • Pool tied the game with another extra-man tally off a Koferl pass at 12:04, and Rolando regained the lead for Christopher Newport at 9:22
  • Matthew Crist pushed the advantage to two at 1:53 and then delivered an assist to Ryan Mills only nine seconds later to put the game out of reach for H-SC
