Lacrosse Holds Off Catholic Rally to Win 9-7

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse held off a late rally by the Catholic University of America Cardinals to win their fourth straight game by a score of 9-7

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fans appeared to have a shootout on their hands as the Tigers went up 3-0 after 5:39 of play as Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch), and Jack Doetzer (Holly Spring, NC/Middle Creek) found the back of the net
  • Catholic got themselves back in the game as the pocked four of the quarters five remaining goals with the last coming at 2:05 to tie the game
  • The Hampden-Sydney defense went into lockdown mode from there, keeping Catholic off the scoreboard over the next two quarters
  • Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) and Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) posted back-to-back tallies at 11:04 and 10:43 in the second quarter, and the Tigers controlled possession for the overwhelming majority of the quarter but could not score again, going into halftime up 6-4
  • Koferl opened up the third quarter with a goal at 10:53, and much like the second, H-SC dominated time of possession and made it an 8-4 game off a Robbie Bugbee (Greensboro, NC/Page) goal at 3:14
  • Koferl netted his third goal of the contest at 13:29 to push the Tiger advantage out to five
  • Victor Licata ended the Catholic scoring drought at 12:43, and Liam Clancy followed with one at 8:26.
  • Catholic wasn't able to score again until 1:58, but H-SC was able to run off the majority of the clock to take the 9-7 win

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Kyle Fraser (Salem, VA/North Cross) held Tim Keith, Catholic's leading scorer with 11 goals in two games, to no goals or assists and just two shots
  • Koferl posted a hat trick
  • Brown contributed four points on two goals and two assists
  • Morris and Doetzer each totaled two points on a goal and an assist
  • Wilson Booth (Cary, NC/Green Hope) was 11-for-18 on face-offs with six ground balls
  • Thomas Passenant (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) forced three turnovers and scooped five ground balls
  • Mitch Renfrow (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) stopped 11 shots

FOR THE FOES

  • Victor Licata paced the Cardinals with three goals and an assist
  • Liam Clancy added on two goals
