Tigers Fall 5-4 to Greensboro in 11 Innings

 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team made a three run comeback to force its game against Greensboro into extra innings but ultimately fell 5-4 in 11 innings. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 3-3 on the season while the Pride improve to 3-5.

The Tigers hit the board first with John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) batting in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) in the bottom of the third, but the Pride fired back with four runs in the next frame to take a three-run lead.

Greensboro held the lead until Lloyd struck again in the seventh, batting in Wiles and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) before tying the game on a Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Ablemarle) RBI-double.

Neither offense could cross the plate in the next two innings, forcing extra play.

Greensboro was able to break the tie in the top of the 11 with a run that the Tigers could not match.

Greensboro recorded 12 hits to the Tigers' nine. Lloyd led the way with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI, a run, and a walk. Wiles and Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) each recorded two.

On the mound, Eric O'Brien (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) allowed four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Matt Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) pitched three scoreless, and Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) pitched a shutout eighth. Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) was the pitcher of decision, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings.

Hampden-Sydney will conclude the ninth annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament tomorrow with a 3:00 PM game against Wesley
