Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team split a double header with Guilford while honoring its senior class. The Tigers fell 6-0 in the first game, but rebounded with a 7-1 victory in game two. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 10-16-1 on the season and 7-7 in ODAC play. Guilford is now 9-19 overall and 5-11 in the ODAC. In between games, the Tigers recognized seniors Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby), Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton), Chris Hall (Stafford, VA/North Stafford), Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville), Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point), and Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry).
Both Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) and Lou Trosch had great starts to game one and were nearly unhittable through six innings. The Quakers knocked in a run in the first inning but it was scoreless after that with the two teams combining for just seven hits.
Guilford finally got to the Tigers in the seventh, however, driving in four runs with three hits and an extended inning courtesy a dropped third strike.
The Quakers tacked onto their lead in the top of the ninth, scoring one run on three hits.
Hampden-Sydney recorded five hits to Guilford's ten.
Johnson went seven innings, allowing five runs – just one earned- on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) threw two innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with a strikeout.
Trosch allowed just two hits in six shutout innings while striking out three.
The Tigers had much more success to start game two, scoring three runs in the first and two more in the second to take the early 5-1 lead.
Hamlett drove in two in the first, and Gray batted in one in each of the first two innings. Spencer Wiles also batted one in while scoring one of his own.
Spencer Wiles then added to the lead with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the fifth. Before the inning was done, Birnbaum singled to drive in Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) to go up 7-1.
The Tigers notched 13 hits, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Gray. Spencer Wiles went 2-for-3, and Hamlett and Ryan Haynie (Melfa, VA/Nandua) each had two hits as well.
Nixon allowed just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings of work. Spencer Garrett (Atlanta, GA/Whitefield Academy) pitched one scoreless inning, and Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) closed out the final two innings.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday, April 8 as they host Lynchburg College in the final game at Ty Cobb Ballpark –Wurdeman Stadium this season. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
