Tigers Split at W&L in Season Finale, Gray Breaks RBI Record

LEXINGTON, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a double header split with the Generals of Washington & Lee. The Tigers took game one by a score of 5-0 before falling 3-0. Senior Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) batted in a run in the first game to become the Tigers' all-time leader with 102 RBI. The Tigers wrap up the season at 11-21-1 overall and 8-12 in conference; the Generals finish the year at 8-15 and 6-13 in the ODAC.

Senior Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) and Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) combined to pitch the shutout with Whitaker going six and West the final three. Whitaker struck out three while allowing seven hits, and West recorded four strikeouts with two hits to collect the save.

The Tigers hit the scoreboard in the third, with Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) batting in Chris Hall (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) scoring on a passed ball.  

Hall then batted in Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) in the fourth, and Gray knocked in Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) in the seventh to go up 4-0.

The Tigers added one more as Mann crossed the plate on a Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) RBI.

Hampden-Sydney knocked ten hits with Hamlett, Rogers, Gray, and Hall each recording two.

In the second game, it was Washington & Lee's Tom Concklin (7.0 IP) and Cory Smith (2.0 IP) who combined for the four-hit shutout.

Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) was the pitcher of decision, allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) went 0.2 innings, and Specner Garrett (Atlanta, GA/Whitefield Academy) allowed one run on one hit and a walk with a strikeout in in one inning.
