Box Score 2 PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team played two more games today in the Snowbird Classic, facing St. John Fisher and Wabash in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Tigers fell 3-2 to St. John Fisher and 6-4 to Wabash. The Tigers, standing at 3-8-1 on the season, will have a day off tomorrow before facing Ohio Wesleyan and Muskingum on Wednesday.
In its first game of the day, Hampden-Sydney dropped a 3-2 decision to St. John Fisher in a 14-inning marathon. Each team was able to hit the ball with 23 hits between the two teams, but runs were a bit harder to come by. The Tigers claimed the first lead of the game as runs by Ryan Haynie (Melfa, VA/Nandua) in the third and Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) in the fourth put the Tigers up 2-0.
The Cardinals cut into the lead with a run in the seventh, and then tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out hit by pitch.
Neither team could end the game in the following four innings, but St. John Fisher took the game in the bottom of the 14th inning, as Mike Roman scored from third on a balk.
Elliott had a great game at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a run scored. Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) and Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) each batted in a run.
Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) pitched six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Rogers went five solid innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Hampden-Sydney fell 6-4 to Wabash with each team using a big inning to keep the game close.
Wabash was the first to reel off four runs, doing so in the bottom of the second on seven hits to take the early lead.
The Tigers returned the favor in the fifth, using five hits to tie the game. Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double, scoring Haynie and Cody Mann (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan). Mann also batted in a run, scoring Drew Porter (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox); and Ryan O'Hara (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) used a sacrifice fly to score Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell). Wabash was able to tally two more runs, scoring one in each of the seventh and eighth.
Hampden-Sydney recorded eight hits to Wabash's 13. Haynie and Smith each notched two hits for the Tigers.
On the mound, Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) allowed four runs on ten hits with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) went 2.1, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. Austin Joseph (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) pitched a third of an inning.
The Tigers will wrap up their time in Florida on Wednesday, as the Tigers will face Ohio Wesleyan at 10:00 AM and Muskingum at 1:00 PM.
