Tigers Drop Two in First Day of Snowbird Classic

PORT CHALOTTE, FL-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team dropped two games to two tough opponents today in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Tigers opened the day with Baldwin Wallace, falling 7-1, and then played Heidelberg, with the Berg taking a 6-0 decision. The Tigers remain in Florida for four more games, taking on St. John Fisher and Wabash tomorrow beginning at 9:00 AM.

Baldwin Wallace used 15 hits and two Hampden-Sydney errors to steady put up seven runs, including one run in each of the first, third and seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets also scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth.

Hampden-Sydney did manage seven hits, and scored a run in the seventh inning with Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) crossing the plate as Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) was walked with the bases loaded. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) and Ryan Haynie (Melfa, VA/Nandua) each had a team-high two hits.

On the mound, Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings, and Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/Bridgewater) went 1.2 innings with one strikeout, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks.

In the second game for Hampden-Sydney, Heidelberg's Adam Manner was in control, pitching eight shutout innings, allowing three hits while walking three and striking out nine.

Johnson, Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point), and Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) each had one hit.

Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

The Tigers next face St. John Fisher, tomorrow at 9:00 AM. They will then play Wabash at 12:00 PM.
