Box Score VIRGINA BEACH, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team, playing its second game in two days after missing action for over two weeks, fell 5-4 to Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action this afternoon.
The Tigers scored the first three runs of the game, but Virginia Wesleyan tied the game at 3-3. After another tie in the eighth, the Marlins knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Hampden-Sydney's offense wasted no time, knocking in two runs in the top of the first as Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) scored on RBI from Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville).
Wiles then used a triple in the second to bat in Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) and up the Tiger lead to 3-0.
The Marlins used one run in the bottom of the second and two in the sixth to tie the game.
Hampden-Sydney reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth with Gray batting in his second run as his sacrifice fly helped Wiles cross the plate.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Marlins tied the game in the bottom of the frame and then won the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) went eight strong innings on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out seven.
Offensively, the Tigers tallied eight hits with Gray and Wiles each recording two. Gray batted in two runs while Wiles scored two and batted in another.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action Sunday, as the Tigers compete in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Tigers will take on Heidelberg and Baldwin Wallace on Sunday, March 8.
