Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The #7 Cabrini College Cavaliers lacrosse team used a six-goal third quarter to knock off Hampden-Sydney 13-10. H-SC is now 2-2 while Cabrini is 2-1.
The two team were dead even on the scoreboard for the first half. H-SC scored the contest's first two goals courtesy of Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) at 8:43 and Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) at 4:24. Evan Downey scored just 23 seconds later, and he tied the game at the 1:27 mark to make it a 2-2 game after 15 minutes of play.
Cabrini rode their momentum into the second quarter as they posted the first two goals from Stephen Kerslake and Mike Leyden to give the Cavaliers a 4-2 edge at 10:43. The Tigers scored three of the frame's final four goals as Funk found the back of the net at 4:23 sent the game into halftime tied 5-5.
The squads traded two goals apiece in the first four minutes of the second half, but four consecutive Cavalier goals in less than three minutes gave the visitors an 11-7 lead. Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA / Christchurch) managed to cut the deficit down to three when he scored with 21 seconds left in the third. Armstrong then opened the fourth quarter by finding the back of the net at 10:04 to make it just an 11-9 contest, but Ethan Heisman and Sebastian Kerslake put the game out of reach at 13-9 with 8:03 remaining.
Armstrong continued his sterling play with another three-goal game, his fourth multi-goal game in four tries, along with a team-high five ground balls. He now sits at 97 goals, tied for 10th most in Hampden-Sydney history. Funk tallied two scores and two assists, and he sits just four points shy of becoming the 27th member of the 100-point club at Hampden-Sydney. Morris and Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) each contributed a goal and an assist. David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA / Collegiate School) notched 12 saves.
Downey, Damian Sobieski, and Kerslake each posted a hat trick, and Leyden had a goal with two assists. Tyler Morrell recorded 10 saves, and Anthony DiNenno went 14-23 on face-offs.
Cabrini held a 34-28 advantage on ground balls and won 16-of-26 face-offs. Each team took care of the ball with Cabrini registering just eight turnovers compared to 11 for the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney travels to Salisbury, MD, to battle the Salisbury Seagulls on Wednesday at 4 pm.
