Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry in Sunday Double Header

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team swept Emory & Henry in an ODAC double header behind two strong pitching performances. The Tigers won game one 10-2 behind a complete game performance from Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) and took an 11-4 decision in game two behind seven innings from Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill). With the wins, the Tigers improve to 8-15-1 on the season and 5-6 in the ODAC. The Wasps drop to 3-21 on the season and 1-12 in ODAC play.

In game one, Hampden-Sydney got off to an early lead and never looked back, scoring a run in the bottom of the first with Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) driving in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point).

The Tigers had a quality third inning, upping its lead to 5-0 after Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) drove in two, and Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) batted in Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Elliott, respectively.

The Tigers then doubled their score in the bottom of the eighth with Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) batting in Gray, Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) batting in Carneal, Dustin Wiles driving in Johnson, and Spencer Wiles knocking in Dustin Wiles and Rogers.

The Wasps managed two runs in the top of the ninth courtesy a two run homer from Kevin Nelson, but Hinson was able to close it out for the 10-2 win.

The Tigers recorded eight hits to Emory & Henry's seven. Spencer Wiles led the way with two hits and three RBI.

Hinson allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The second game was tightly contested to start with the Tigers holding a 2-1 advantage through four with Carneal scoring both runs. The home team pulled away in the bottom of the fifth, however, using five hits to drive in four runs and take a 6-1 lead. Elliott highlighted the frame, driving in two with a single.

Gray added to the lead when he drove in John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) in the sixth. Gray later scored in the inning on a Hamlett RBI to up the lead to 8-1.

Emory & Henry cut its deficit in the seventh, driving in two runs across the plate.

The Tigers fired right back and Hamlett batted in two as part of a three run eighth, to put the home team up 11-3.

Emory & Henry did not surrender in the ninth, tacking on one more run.

The Tigers recorded an impressive 18 hits, including a 4-of-5 game from Rogers. Gray added three hits, and Lloyd, Spencer Wiles, Hamlett and Johnson all had two.

West went seven strong, allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk. Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) closed out the game, allowing three runs - two unearned - on three hits and two walks with a strikeout. 

Hampden-Sydney remains at home and will return to action Tuesday, March 31 as the Tigers host Randolph-Macon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
