Funk Scores in Overtime to Lift Lacrosse to 7-6 Win Over Washington and Lee

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) found Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) with 37 seconds left for the game-winning goal in overtime as Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse defeated Washington & Lee 7-6.

The Generals Christian Zanetis scored the opening goal at 13:49, but Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) and Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) gave Hampden-Sydney the lead at 2-1 with 3:17 left in the first quarter. Zanetis tied the game at 2-2 to end the first quarter.

W&L scored back-to-back tallies just 1:06 into the second quarter. Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) drew the Tigers within one with a man-up score at 4:56, but Tyler Goldman gave W&L a 5-3 lead going into the half as he scored with only six seconds left.

Only one goal was posted in the third frame when Funk found the back of the net at 9:05, and H-SC went into the fourth quarter trailing 5-4.

Fleet Jernigan (Kitty Hawk, NC / First Flight) knotted the game at 5-5 at 12:28, but Cam Lewis put the Generals back out in front at 11:40. Funk then delivered the assist to James Hughes (Apex, NC / Middle Creek) to tie the game at the 6:10 mark. Each team got a couple shots on goal over the closing minutes of the fourth quarter but the goalkeepers made timely saves.

Hampden-Sydney won the overtime's opening face-off and called a timeout at 3:31 but turned it over. W&L cleared the ball, called a timeout, but they too turned it over on their possession. The Tigers cleared it with 1:57 left , and Wallenborn delivered the game-winning assist from behind the net to Funk.

Funk contributed two goals and an assist while Armstrong added a goal and two assists. Wallenborn and Koferl tacked on a goal and an assist each. Jared Arntzen (Atlanta, GA / Blue Ridge) went 6-11 on face-offs. 

Zanetis and Lewis each posted two scores for Washington and Lee. Wyatt Devine notched 13 saves, and Bobby Doyle won 7-of-13 face-offs. 

Hampden-Sydney held a 28-23 advantage on ground balls and forced 23 turnovers while committing just 13. W&L narrowly won the face-off battle, going 9-for-17, but H-SC had a 29-21 edge in shots.

Hampden-Sydney hosts Greensboro College on Wednesday at 7 pm at Hellmuth Field.
