Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse defense held the Guilford College Quakers to just one score over the last 23 minutes of the game en route to a 9-6 win on Wednesday.
The Quakers offense had been explosive coming into the game, scoring at least 17 goals in four of its previous six games, but Guilford only managed 26 shots on the night and just 10 on goal as they were mostly shut down.
It did not appear that Guilford would be limited after one quarter of play with Guilford leading 3-1, but Hampden-Sydney took over in the second quarter. Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, NC / East Chapel Hill) scored at 12:26 and Fleet Jernigan (Kitty Hawk, NC / First Flight) tied the game at 3-3 with 6:59 left in the half. Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) posted a man-up tally with three minutes to go in the second quarter to give Hampden-Sydney a 4-3 lead going into intermission.
Guilford started the second-half strong as back-to-back goals saw the Quakers take back a 5-4 lead, but they would not be heard from again until late in the fourth quarter. Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) scored at 4:37 to tie the game while Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) and Funk each found the back of the net in the last three minutes to propel H-SC to a 7-5 advantage after three quarters.
H-SC opened the final frame with consecutive man-up scores from Koferl and James Hughes (Apex, NC / Middle Creek). Duncan Fitzgerald ended the drought for Guilford at 4:54, but several late penalties halted any chance of a Quakers comeback.
Koferl paced the offense with three goals and an assist while Jernigan scored once while handing out three assists. Funk tallied two scores and an assist, and Dontae Buck (Baltimore, MD / Baltimore City College) went 11-for-14 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Hughes and Armstrong each contributed a goal and an assist.
Six different players scored for Guilford while Daniel Haupt contributed a goal and an assist. Thomas Deane recorded 10 saves.
H-SC won 14-of-18 face-offs, took the groundball battle 31-24, and the Tigers outshot the Quakers 41-24. H-SC had its best outing of the year on extra-man opportunities, going 4-for-9 when man up.
Hampden-Sydney hosts rival Washington & Lee University on Saturday at 7 pm.
