Tigers Drop Two at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team dropped two games at Shenandoah in a Sunday ODAC double header. The Hornets, who improve to 9-2-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play, took decisions of 4-1 and 7-0. The Tigers now stand at 5-13-1 on the season and 2-4 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney will stay on the road and travel to Ashland for a 3:30 game against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday.

In the first game, Shenandoah's Darrell Thompson claimed the win, allowing one run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in seven innings. Hampden-Sydney's Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) pitched all eight innings for the Tigers, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Tigers were the first to put a run on the board, with Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) batting in younger brother Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) on a double in the top of the third.

The Hornets scored two in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead for good.

As a team, the Tigers notched seven hits, including two from Dustin Wiles.

Shenandoah's pitching in the second game was nearly perfect, with Michael Scimanico (7.0 IP) and Matthew Wilson (2.0 IP) combining to pitch a shutout while allowing just one hit and two walks. Scimanico fanned eight batters.

Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) tallied the hit for the Tigers.

 Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, throwing the first 2.2 innings and allowing five runs – just one earned – on six hits and a walk.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 25 as the Tigers face Randolph-Macon in Ashland. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
