Roanoke Lacrosse Comes Back for 11-10 Win

SALEM, VA – Roanoke Lacrosse came back from a three-goal fourth quarter deficit to defeat Hampden-Sydney 11-10 on Saturday afternoon. H-SC is now 3-4, 1-1 in the ODAC while Roanoke is 5-2, 2-0.

The Tigers led 3-0 after the first quarter behind goals from Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA / Christchurch), Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin), and Ian Levin (). Roanoke opened the second quarter with a score at 12:29, but James Hughes (Chapel Hill, NC / East Chapel Hill) needed just nine seconds to negate the Maroon goal and scored again at 11:43 to put the Tigers up 5-1. Roanoke seized some momentum heading into halftime as Austin Nader and Joey Dishaw found the back of the net to make it a 5-2 game.

Armstrong and Morris scored back-to-back goals to put the Tigers out in front 7-3, but three goals in the last four minutes from the Maroons made it just a one-goal lead, 7-6- for Hampden-Sydney after three quarters.

Hampden-Sydney ended the Roanoke run when Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) and Hughes posted the first two scores of the fourth quarter, giving H-SC a 9-6 lead with 10:14 left. Roanoke proceeded to pour in five consecutive goals, taking the lead at 4:04 then going up two at 2:59. Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) drew the Tigers within one on an unassisted tally at 2:11. Hampden-Sydney got two shots right on the crease, but Dylan Torrey was able to make two-point blank saves with the last coming with 38 seconds remaining. He managed to corral the ball on the save, and Roanoke was able to clear and run out the clock for the win.

Hughes posted his second straight hat trick while Armstrong and Morris each scored twice. Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) dished out three assists while going 3-for-4 on face-offs with five ground balls. Funk posted a goal and two assists while Wallenborn and Levin each tallied a score and an assist. David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA / Collegiate School) notched 16 saves.

Dishaw led Roanoke with three goals, Tyler McWilliams contributed two goals and two assists, and Kevin Jackson added two scores and an assist.

Roanoke held a 57-29 advantage in shots but only managed to put 27 on goal as many sailed far wide or high of the cage. H-SC won 13-of-25 face-offs and narrowly lose the ground ball battle 30-28.

The Tigers will host the Guilford College Quakers on Wednesday at 7 pm at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Turf Field.
