Baseball Falls to Ohio Wesleyan, Muskingum

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The Hamdpen-Sydney baseball team fell 6-1 to Ohio Wesleyan and 10-6 to Muskingum on Wednesday, wrapping up the team's trip to Florida in the Snowbird Classic.

After the 6-1 loss, the Tigers had a slugfest with the Muskies, as the two teams combined for 26 hits and 16 runs.

The teams traded one run each over the first three innings, with the Tigers' Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin) scoring on a Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI.

Muskingum opened up the game in the bottom of the third with five runs, but a three-run homer from Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) in the fifth, and a Ryan Haynie (Melfa, VA/Nandua) run in the sixth put the Tigers within one at 6-5.

The Muskingum lead was pushed back up after two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Haynie crossed the plate one more time in the eighth on a Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) RBI, but Muskingum added two more insurance runs.

Rogers notched a game-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with an RBI. Carneal, Haynie, John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) each had two hits.

Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) was the pitcher of decision, three runs – two earned – on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.

Hampden-Sydney will return to Virginia but remain on the road, heading to Salem to face Roanoke College in a double header on Saturday, March 14. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
