Tiger Baseball Falls 14-9 at Ferrum

Box Score

FERRUM, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball took its first loss of the season, as Ferrum defeated the Tigers 14-9 in the two team's third meeting in two days. The Tigers had taken the first two meetings at Ty Cobb Ballpark yesterday. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 2-1 on the young season, and Ferrum has a 1-2 record.

The high scoring affair had just one scoreless inning through the first eight.

The Tigers wasted no time putting runs on the board, scoring two in the first with Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) batting in Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) and Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby).

Ferrum, whose offense struggled on Saturday, had its bats come alive with a six-run output in the first inning to take the big early lead.

Ferrum tacked on one more in the bottom of the second before the Tigers started to come back. In the top of the third, Ryan Haynie (Melfa, VA/Nandua) batted in two runs with a double, and then in the fifth, Carneal continued to hit with a three-run homerun to put the Tigers down two at 8-7.

After another Panther run, Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and Haynie batted in John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Ryan O'Hara (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) to tie the game at 9-9.

The Panthers, however, notched two runs in both the seventh and eighth to claim the 13-9 victory.

Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) pitched the first 1.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and three walks. Austin Joseph (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing one run on one hit and a walk in an inning of work.

At the plate, Hamlett and Carneal each had three hits, with a combined three runs. Carneal also batted in four runs. Gray, Lloyd and Haynie each recorded two hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Wednesday, February 11 as the Tigers hit the road to face Marymount at 7:00 PM. The two teams will play at Batcroft Field, home of George Washington University, in Alexandria.
