Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball opened its season on a good note, taking two wins over Ferrum in its opening day double header at Ty Cobb Ballpark, taking decisions of 2-0 and 4-2. Now at 2-0, the Tigers will play Ferrum (0-2) one more time, traveling to face the Panthers tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM.

The Tigers took game one in a 2-0 decision, with the pitching combination of Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex), Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox), and Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) combining to allow just two hits in seven innings. Johnson and Perkins both went three with Perkins picking up the victory. Whitaker came in in the seventh to claim the save.

Hampden-Sydney's offense broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fifth as Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) batted in Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) on a two-out single.

The Tigers added one more run for insurance in the sixth when a Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) ground out drove in John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run).

For the game, the Tigers out hit Ferrum 6-2 with Hamlett going a team-best 2-for-3.

Much like the first game, the second was deadlocked at 0-0 through the first four innings. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) led off with a double, and was later batted in with an RBI-double from Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville).

This game, Ferrum responded in the top of the sixth, with two runs of their own, capitalizing on a Hampden-Sydney error to take a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short lived, though, as the Tigers struck again in the bottom frame. After Ryan Haynie (Melda, VA/Nandua) batted in Johnson, Spencer Wiles struck with his second double, driving in two more runs to up the Tiger lead to 4-2.

Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/Bridgewater) then came in in the seventh to close out the game and pick up the save.

The Tigers tallied 12 hits to Ferrum's five. Spencer Wiles went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, one run, and one stolen base. Johnson, Haynie, and Moe Goethe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) all recorded two hits.

Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) pitched the first four innings, allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout. Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) picked up the win after allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits.

Hampden-Sydney will play Ferrum once more, facing the Panthers at Ferrum, Sunday, February 8 at 2:00 PM.
