Lacrosse Impresses in 10-3 Win Over Christopher Newport

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse earned an impressive 10-3 win over Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are now 2-1.

The defense was remarkable throughout the game. The Captains, coming off a 17-goal performance against Randolph-Macon and a 13-goal output against a ranked Washington & Lee squad, failed to score in the first quarter and finished with more turnovers (4) than shots (3). Meanwhile, H-SC got goals from Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) and Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) to go into the second frame leading 2-0.

H-SC wasted no time taking full control of the contest early in the second quarter when back-to-back scores from Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) and Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA / Christchurch) at 13:49 and 12:52 put the Tigers ahead 4-0. CNU got on the board for the first time a little over a minute later when John Thompson found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity. Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) chipped in with a goal with 2:53 left to give Hampden-Sydney a 5-1 halftime advantage.

Corey Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry) led off the third quarter with two goals, one at 11:30 and the other at 10:28, to push the lead to 7-1. CNU then got their first even strength goal at 2:46 and followed with another at 1:04. CNU won the face-off and drew a one-minute penalty with 40 seconds left to continue their momentum, but David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA / Collegiate School) recorded a save at the 21 second, and Kevin Wilhelm (Burke, VA / Lake Braddock) was able to clear the ball and run out the game clock to put H-SC ahead 7-3 after 45 minutes of play.

CNU started the fourth quarter with the ball and 20 more seconds of an extra-man advantage, but Noftsinger made another big save and H-SC then got the ball back on a turnover. Wallenborn then made it a five-goal lead at 11:17. Funk had a shot on the crease, but goalkeeper Matt Hayden made a point black save. He was unable to secure the ball and Koferl picked it up and scored on a chippy at 9:36 to give Hampden-Sydney a 9-3 advantage. Thomas Armstrong tacked on a goal at 2:31. CNU won the next face-off but turned it over less than a minute later on what would prove to be their final possession of the game.

Armstrong and Mavromatis each contributed two goals and an assist while Wallenborn and Koferl each had two tallies. Morris chimed in with a goal and an assist, Dontae Buck won 12-of-16 face-offs with five ground balls, and Noftsinger notched 11 saves. Matt Hayden posted 12 stops for the Captains.

H-SC won the ground ball battle 33-22 and outshot the Captains 37-25.
