Mary Washington Defeats Lacrosse 14-13

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Mary Washington defeated Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse 14-13 on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter, but the Eagles scored the next four to go up 4-3 at 11:25 in the second. With Mary Washington leading 5-4 at 8:03, back-to-back goals from Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) put H-SC back in front by one at 5:44. UMW closed out the half with two scores to go into intermission leading 7-6.

The Eagles scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 9-6 lead at 13:08, but H-SC would go on to score five of the next six goals as Thomas Armstrong's (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) strike with only 7.2 left gave H-Sc an 11-10 lead heading into the final frame.

Hampden-Sydney started off the quarter with the ball after Mary Washington committed a slashing penalty with 0.2 seconds left on the third quarter clock, but H-SC wasn't able to capitalize. Jack Bondurant and Greg Smith posted consecutive scores as Mary Washington regained the lead at 12-11 with 12:51 left. James Hughes (Apex, NC / Middle Creek) and Armstrong netted two straight tallies, the second putting the Tigers out in front 13-12 with 6:57 to go. Miles Davis then tied the game at the six-minute mark.

Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) had a shot right on the crease at the 31-second mark, but Pete Shammas made a point-blank save and grabbed the groundball. He passed it ahead to Chris Gracia in stride for a transition opportunity and he dished it off to Greg Smith for what proved to be the game-winning score. H-SC won the ensuing face-off and managed to get one shot off that went wide.

Armstrong paced Hampden-Sydney with five points on four goals and one assist. Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) contributed three goals and one assist, Funk posted two scores and an assist, and Hughes scored twice. Dontae Buck (Baltimore, MD / Baltimore City College) won 14-of-25 face-offs with five ground balls and CJ White (Suffolk, VA / Nansemond-Suffolk) collected a team-high six ground balls.

Jack Bondurant scored five times for the visitors while Greg Smith had five points on three goals and two assists. Miles Davis and Mike Marson each tacked on two goals and an assist.

H-SC held a 40-28 advantage in shots but Shammas turned back 14 compared to just six saved for the Tigers. H-SC won the ground ball battle 42-28 and forced 21 Eagle turnovers while committing just 13. H-SC also won 15 of the game's 28 face-offs. Each team's man-down defense was strong as Mary Washing went 2-7 on extra-man opportunities and Hampden-Sydney 1-7.

Hampden-Sydney returns to Lewis C. Everett Stadium next Saturday for a 1 pm contest vs. Wittenberg.
