Box Score ARLINGTON, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball fell 5-3 to Marymount on Wednesday evening dropping to 2-2 on the young season. Marymount gets its first win of the season to improve to 1-2. The Tigers return home to face Stevenson in a double header this Saturday.
Despite the loss, the Tiger pitching staff surrendered just seven hits on the night. Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) got the start, going shutout three innings while allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts.
While Nixon shut down the Saint bats, Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) put the Tigers on the board, leading off the second inning with a single and stolen base, and then scoring on a Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) RBI.
Gray and the Tigers struck again in the fourth, with Gray and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) both scoring on RBI by Lloyd and Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
Marymount ended its drought in the bottom of the frame putting one on the board. The Saints then added to that and took their first lead as a three-run fifth put them up 4-3.
One more Marymount run in the eighth gave the team a cushion which Charlie Digiulian was able to preserve and pick up the save.
On the mound for the Tigers, Josh Blair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) allowed one unearned run in an inning of work; Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) also allowed one run in one inning; Mason Wright (Newsoms, VA/Southampton) pitched one shutout; and Aaron Kurz (Richmond, VA/James River) was the pitcher of decision for the Tigers, allowing three runs on three hits in an inning's work.
Gray led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored. Lloyd went 2-for-4 with one run batted in and one scored. Five other Tigers knocked one hit as the team had ten.
Marymount's offense was led by Brandon Padgett who went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jake Brown was the winning pitcher, going four shutout innings with four strikeouts and three hits.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, February 14 as they host Stevenson in a double header. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
