Racquet Tigers Impress in 8-1 Win Over Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hampden-Sydney Tennis team had an impressive outing in its 8-1 win at Lynchburg College on Wednesday.

Thacher Jennings (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) and Mitchell Swann (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) posted a rare 8-0 shutout win at the #1 doubles flight. J.B. Weaver (Raleigh, NC / Needham Broughton) and Fitzhugh Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA / James Monroe) took an 8-3 win at #1 doubles while David Dodson (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Pete Dooley (Glen Allen, VA / Deep Run) were victorious by a score of 8-2 at #3 doubles.

Johnson, playing up at the #1 singles flight due to an injury when he normally mans the #2 slot, lost 7-5, 6-4 to Lynchburg's regular #1, Matt Karvelas. The Tigers easily swept the remaining matches. Jennings dispatched of Josh Johnson 6-2, 6-1 at #2 while Swann earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #3. Dodson vanquished Tyler Long 6-0, 6-2, and Dooley went unharmed 6-0, 6-0 at #5 6-0, 6-0. Houston Wilson (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Collegiate) won the #6 match by default due to injuries leading Hornets unable to field a player.

Hampden-Sydney hosts Bridgewater on Saturday at 1 pm.
