HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney College Director of Athletics
Chad Eisele has announced the appointment of
Brian Boland as the College's new head tennis coach.
One of the most accomplished coaches in collegiate tennis history, Boland brings more than three decades of coaching and leadership experience to Hampden-Sydney. Over 23 seasons as a collegiate head coach, he compiled an overall record of 612-99 (.861), won four NCAA Division I National Championships, six ITA National Team Indoor Championships, and numerous conference championships while earning National Coach of the Year honors twice, ACC Coach of the Year six times, Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times and ITA Regional Coach of the Year seven times.
"We are very excited to have Brian join us on the Hill to lead our tennis program. He is a proven champion tennis coach, but more importantly, he has built his career around developing young men to be leaders both on and off the court." – H-SC Director of Athletics Chad Eisele
Boland most recently founded Boland College Tennis Placement, helping aspiring student-athletes identify and secure opportunities to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Boland built one of the greatest dynasties in college tennis during his 16 seasons as head coach at the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers won four NCAA Division I National Championships (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017), six ITA National Team Indoor Championships (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2017), 13 consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championships (2004-16) and 12 ACC Tournament championships.
Virginia reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Boland's final 14 seasons, finished as NCAA runner-up twice (2011, 2012), advanced to four national semifinals and three additional quarterfinal appearances. The Cavaliers also established an ACC-record 140 consecutive conference dual-match victories from 2006-16, the longest conference winning streak in any sport in ACC history.
Boland was named ACC Coach of the Year six times and National Coach of the Year twice (2008, 2016). His Virginia teams produced 38 All-Americans, three NCAA Singles Champions, multiple NCAA Doubles Champions, four ACC Players of the Year, four ACC Rookies of the Year, 13 ACC Tournament MVPs and 62 All-ACC selections. Virginia finished ranked among the ITA Top 10 nationally during each of his final 14 seasons, including Top Three finishes 10 times.
Following Virginia's fourth NCAA Championship in five years, Boland was selected by the United States Tennis Association to serve as Head of Men's Player Development, helping establish the national development system at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida while overseeing the country's top male players and coaches.
Boland returned to collegiate coaching in 2018 at Baylor University, where he quickly rebuilt the Bears into a national contender. In his first season, Baylor finished 25-6, captured the Big 12 Tournament Championship, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals and finished No. 6 in the final ITA national rankings. The Bears followed with a 13-3 record and a perfect 10-0 home record before the 2020 season was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Boland began his collegiate head coaching career at his alma mater, Indiana State University, where he transformed the Sycamores into a nationally ranked Top 20 program. During his five seasons, Indiana State posted a 121-32 overall record, won three consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships, earned three NCAA Tournament appearances and hosted three NCAA Regional Championships.
The Sycamores compiled a remarkable 57-3 conference record during his tenure and did not lose a Missouri Valley Conference match over his final three seasons. Boland led Indiana State to the program's first Missouri Valley Conference Championship, first NCAA Tournament appearance, first NCAA Tournament victory and first ITA Top-20 national ranking (No. 18). He was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times and ITA Regional Coach of the Year three times.

Virginia has always held a special place in my heart, and the opportunity to return and invest in another generation of young men at a place as distinctive as Hampden-Sydney is incredibly special.

What They Are Saying About New Hampden-Sydney Head Tennis Coach Brian Boland (July 29, 2026)
"During my coaching years at UVA, I marveled at the dominant tennis program Brian built. He achieved what many thought was impossible, and better yet, he did it with players of great character and hired coaches who were such gifted and quality people. He created a lasting culture of excellence that made us so proud. I often picked his brain for ideas on how to get the most out of the players I coached, and I was very impressed with his insights. Brian knew what motivated people to go beyond what they even thought was possible. To me, that was his greatest strength as a coach. I am excited for Brian and this opportunity as he leads the Hampden-Sydney program." – Tony Bennett, Former University of Virginia National Championship Basketball Coach

Despite everything he had accomplished, Brian always welcomed me, answered my questions, and took the time to help me grow. I will always be grateful for the guidance he has given me over the years. There are very few coaches in the history of college tennis who have achieved what Brian has while also impacting so many lives. His legacy extends far beyond championships—it is reflected in the countless coaches, players, and people he has mentored along the way." – Silviu Tanasoiu, Cornell University Director of Intercollegiate Tennis and Head Coach

Brian's record speaks for itself. He has led championship-caliber programs, winning multiple NCAA National Championships while earning numerous National Coach of the Year honors. His success is no accident—it is the result of exceptional leadership, relentless preparation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Beyond his remarkable success on the court, Brian is widely recognized as one of the best recruiters in college tennis. He has an extraordinary ability to identify talented student-athletes, build meaningful relationships with them and their families, and develop them into champions both on and off the court. Brian is also among the very best fundraisers in collegiate athletics. He understands how to engage alumni, donors, and supporters to build the resources necessary for a championship program. His ability to elevate a program extends far beyond wins and losses—it creates a culture of long-term success. Perhaps Brian's greatest strength is his work ethic. He is one of the hardest-working people I have ever known. No one will outwork him. He leads by example, demands excellence, and inspires those around him to achieve more than they thought possible. Under his leadership, our program won the university's first NCAA team championship, but his greatest accomplishment was the culture he built. Coach Boland challenged us to pursue excellence on and off the court, developing us not only as athletes, but as students and as people. His mentorship, patience, and unwavering belief in his players left a lasting impact on me that extends far beyond tennis. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to play for Coach Boland. "Brian is a dynamic person who cares very deeply about his student-athletes not only on the court, but off the court as well. His results on the court speak loudly, but what most people don't see is the deep thinking, strategy, planning and foundation he lays down long before an athlete puts on the gear. It was an honor to work with him, see his process and be a part of his story as an athletic administrator. Success is not by chance with him—it is his plan and I'm very excited to see him take the helm at Hampden-Sydney." – Keith Miller, Former Associate Athletics Director for Compliance at Baylor University
"I served as Brian Boland's Volunteer Assistant Coach at the University of Virginia from 2010-15, and my experience working alongside him has greatly shaped the coach I am today. To put it frankly, I would not be where I am today, as the Vanderbilt Head Men's Tennis Coach, without serving under Coach Boland. He showed me the blueprint to, not only having a successful, winning program, but the blueprint to having a successful winning culture in business and in life. I was grateful to have a front row seat on how to build a program from the ground up, how to mentor and inspire young men, how to build relationships within the university and community and how to put the right people on the bus. Through this experience, I learned what it takes to win at the highest level, and I use a lot of his formula to this day with building the Vanderbilt Men's Tennis Program. Hampden-Sydney has made a phenomenal hire and brought on a winner!" – Scott Brown, Vanderbilt University Head Men's Tennis Coach,
Former University of Virginia Associate Head Coach, Former ATP Tour Professional and NCAA All-American

From the very beginning of the recruiting process, he helped me understand exactly what it would take to earn a place at the University of Virginia—from preparing for the SATs to achieving the results I needed both on and off the court. He also took the time to explain the opportunities available through college tennis and helped me make one of the most important decisions of my life. Once I arrived at Virginia, Coach Boland challenged me every day to become a better player and a better competitor. He helped toughen me mentally, prepared me for the demands and rigors of professional tennis, and taught me how to think strategically by maximizing my strengths while exposing my opponents' weaknesses. Those lessons became invaluable throughout my professional career. Brian is far more than an exceptional tennis coach. He is a mentor, a leader, and someone who genuinely invests in the success of every student-athlete he coaches. "I had the opportunity to spend the spring semester of 2020 at Baylor with Brian Boland. Although I was injured and never competed, I was able to see first-hand the way he coached and led his program. Brian is a true players' coach. He is honest, approachable, and genuinely wants what is best for each player. He worked with me to create a flexible plan that allowed me to continue pursuing professional tennis while remaining part of the Baylor program, and I always appreciated that trust and support. Brian loves to win and knows how to build a culture of excellence, but what stood out most to me was the way he cared about his players as people. Even in my short time with him, it was clear why he has earned so much respect throughout college tennis. Any program would be fortunate to have him leading it." – Jenson Brooksby, Former ATP World No. 33, ATP Tour Champion, Former U.S. Davis Cup Team Member, Former U.S. Open Junior Finalist
"I played for Coach Boland from 2014 to 2017, and he shaped me into the person I am today far more than he shaped me as a tennis player. I arrived at 18 years old, and Brian saw who I could become before I did. He is one of the most influential mentors in my life, on or off the court. His history of championship-winning teams speaks for itself, but more importantly, he builds people first and champions second. There is no one better suited to lead young men and push them toward their greatest potential than Brian Boland. Hampden-Sydney has made the best possible decision for the future of its program. Coach Boland will be transformational, not just in what this team achieves on the court, but in the culture that he builds and the impact that culture will have on the school and the broader community. He genuinely cares about the people he coaches and is deeply invested in helping them grow—not only as student-athletes, but as individuals. Brian is one of the premier tennis coaches in college tennis and in the world. His record speaks for itself. He has developed elite junior players, led a Division I program to four NCAA National Championships, and helped numerous student-athletes successfully transition to the professional tour. But what makes Brian truly special isn't just what he's accomplished—it's how he accomplishes it. I had the opportunity to get to know Brian well during his time at Baylor. He spent time with our coaching staff, met with our players, and shared ideas that had a lasting impact on our program. I truly believe he helped make us better. To this day, we still use many of the principles, leadership lessons, and cultural ideas he brought to our team.
