HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Virginia Wesleyan upended Hampden-Sydney Tennis 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon in a match that was much more competitive than the final score would typically indicate.
Graham Wilson and Kenneth Downling narrowly defeated J.B. Weaver (Raleigh, NC / Needham Broughton) and Fitzhugh Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA / James Monroe) 9-8 (2) in #1 doubles. Thacher Jennings (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) and Mitchell Swann (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) succumbed 8-6 at the #2 flight. Lawrence Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) and David Dodson (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) took an 8-5 win at the #3 spot. Johnson nearly pulled off a huge comeback win in #2 singles. He lost the first set 7-5 before bouncing back in impressive fashion to win set two 6-1 to force a super tiebreaker. Johnson fell down 6-1 in the early going, but two consecutive double faults helped Johnson make it just a 9-8 advantage for the Marlins' Kenneth Downing. Downing forced Johnson into a difficult lob shot and Downing returned a hard hitter well out of the range of Johnson to get the win.
Hampden-Sydney looks to get back on the winning side on Wednesday vs. Lynchburg at 3:30 pm.
