Tennis Upends Guilford 6-3

GREENSBORO, NC – Hampden-Sydney Tennis upended Guilford College 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Guilford was picked fourth in the ODAC Preseason Poll and received one first place vote to finish ahead of the Tigers.

The Tigers won two out of three doubles matches, securing wins at the #1 and #3 flights. J.B. Weaver (Raleigh, NC / Needham Broughton) and Fitzhugh Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA / James Monroe) teamed together to win 8-4 at the #1 flight while Thacher Jennings (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) and Mitchell Swann (Lynchburg, VA / E.C. Glass) were victorious by a 9-8 score at the #3 spot.

Johnson came out on top at #2 singles in a tightly contested match at 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and Zack King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) won in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at the #3 flight. Jennings took a win at the #4 spot with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 decision, and Lawrence Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) rounded out the Tiger wins with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory at #6.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Ferrum College on Friday for a 3:30 pm match.
