Baseball Drops Two to Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, VA-The Bridgewater Eagles remain undefeated in ODAC play as they took two games from the Tigers in ODAC action on Saturday, April 6. Bridgewater won the first game 9-5 and the second 7-6. With the losses, Hampden-Sydney drops to 15-15-1 overall and 7-7 in conference while the Eagles improve to 19-7 overall and 12-0 in the ODAC.

For the third time in three games, Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) led off with a hite for the Tigers and scored on a Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) at bat. The 1-0 lead was short lived with two runs from the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tigers fired right back in the second as Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and Hamlett batted in runs to go up 3-2. 

The back-and-forth battle continued as Bridgewater reclaimed the lead in the third with two runs and after one run in the fourth led 5-3.

Hampden-Sydney cut the lead to one in the fifth as Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) scored on a Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) RBI-single. 

Four more runs from the Eagles, however, put the home team up 9-4 after seven innings. The Tigers tacked on one more run with James Keller (Fredericksburg, VA/VMI) batting in Chamberlin in the eighth.

Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings. He also struck out three and walked three.

Hamlett had three of the team's 11 hits, and Gray, Chamberlin and Keller each recorded two hits.

Bridgewater was the first team to take a lead in game two with three runs in the third. John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) each scored in the fifth on an error to come within one. 

The Eagles upped their lead with three more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Tigers fought back, though; Kuhns and Hamlett scored on a two-RBI sinlge in the seventh to make it a 6-4 game. The Tigers then came within one in the eighth as Elliott and Hamlett each batted in runs. The Tigers could not score the tying run.

Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and three walks.

Hamlett, Elliott, and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) each recorded two of the Tigers' nine hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action at Ty Cobb Ballpark as the Tigers host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
