Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA-Senior shortstop Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) delivered the walk off RBI-single in the 11th inning to take a 6-5 win over fourth-seeded Washington & Lee and advance the second-seeded Tigers to game nine of the 2013 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The Tigers will have a rematch with fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon tonight at approximately 6:10 pm.
The elimination game was back-and-forth with each team holding leads. The two teams scored a run in the first inning to keep the game knotted at 1-1 until the third inning. Flinchum scored on a Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) to take a 2-1 lead.
That lead, however, was short lived as the Generals notched two runs in the fourth, but the Tigers fired back in the bottom half of the inning with Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) batting in Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River).
Tucker then batted in Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead the Tigers would hold onto until the ninth.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, a wild pitch from Hampden-Sydney allowed Joe Scalzo to cross the plate and tie the game at 4-4.
Hampden-Sydney had a chance in the tenth with the bases loaded and one out, but the Generals were able to escape with no runs scored and send the game to yet another inning.
Again with two outs in the 11th, Washington & Lee managed one run to take the late 5-4 lead.
The Tigers continued to battle, though. John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) led off the bottom of the frame with a double. Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) advanced Lloyd to third with a bunt single, and after stealing second set up a walk for Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville). Gray was then walked to bring home the game-tying run, and Flinchum came up clutch with the walk off RBI-single.
Freshman Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) pitched the first 7.1 innings, allowing three runs - one earned - on seven hits and one walk. Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) allowed two runs in 3.1 innings of relief, and Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) picked up the win after retiring the final batter of the game.
Hampden-Sydney, 23-16-1 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC Tournament will face Randolph-Macon at 6:10 this evening. Live stats and audio links to the game can be found here.
